The Canadian military is offering $637.000 to anyone who hacks and then improves the defenses of a military vehicle, a pickup truck, used by his forces to transport troops and equipment.
On Tuesday, October 6, the Canadian Ministry of National Defense issued a invitation to tender with which he is looking for contractors (technicians) security. Applications will be accepted until October 27.
The contractors should do hacking on one of his vehicles, and optionally, at the request of the army, provide patches and safety fixes for the car.
The announcement does not give details about the type of vehicle the hackers-contractors need to break (bypass the better safety), but o CBC News, a Canadian TV station, reports that it is a 2015 truck, which technical details and specifications will remain secret until research is completed.
According to the official specifications for awarding the project, hackers will be asked to:
- Characterize a self-propelled vehicle
- They find vulnerabilities and security measures
- Develop and show holdings
- They conduct Synthesis
- Identify possible security measures that could prevent hacking of vulnerabilities in the vehicle
- Test security measures
- Develop a test platform with some vehicle operations to study the workshop
- Develop procedures control
- Evaluate safety standards for vehicles and protocols
- Develop cyber security processes
The Canadian government will allocate 158.000 dollars (205.000 CAD) for the car hacking and extra 479.000 dollars (620.000 CAD) the subsequent security code update.
