The European Court of Human Rights ruled that companies should inform them employees them if they monitor their emails.
In a milestone case on privacy, the European Court of Human Rights ruled on Tuesday that companies must make sure that workers know in advance about the monitoring of the Email in their work.
According to Reuters, in a case of a man named Bogdan Barbulescu, who was hired 10 years ago in a company and used him account company messages to contact his family, the judges found that the Romanian courts had failed to protect his private correspondence because his company had not given advance notice that it was monitoring his communication.
The company had presented him with printed papers of its employee's correspondence with his brother and his fiancee as evidence of infringementof the company's prohibition on using email for personal use.
The European Court of Justice in Strasbourg ruled by 11-6 majority that the Romanian judges, who covered their employer's decision, had failed to protect Barbulescu's right to privacy.
