Facebook is reportedly testing a new, very fast Ethernet switch that will allow it to transfer data between its servers.
The new Wedge 100 will feature 32 ports capable of delivering 100 gigabits per second, said Jay Parikh, Head of Facility and Infrastructure at Facebok at the Structure conference held yesterday according to VB. Currently Facebok is transferring its data with 40 gigabits per second, said Parikh.
Other companies, such as Cisco, Arista, and Mellanox, already have Ethernet switches on 100 gigabits.
Facebook, meanwhile, has already deployed "several thousand" Wedge 100s in the centers data of her, as she wrote in social network blog today the technician software and network engineering equipment Zhiping Yao.
Facebook has also built its own servers to store data, inspired by its own needs.
And if you're thinking about Facebook's needs, of course we're talking about speed and bandwidth.
The company currently has more than 1.550 millions of active users each month, and these users want to publish videos that need speed to show up quickly.
So, material like Wedge 100 seems to make sense.
