Facebook is reportedly testing a new very fast Ethernet switch that will allow it to transfer data between its servers.
The new Wedge 100 will have 32 ports capable of transferring 100 gigabits per second, said Jay Parikh, global head engineeringand infrastructure of Facebook, at the Structure conference held yesterday according to VB. Currently, Facebook is transferring its data at 40 gigabits per second, Parikh said.
Άλλες εταιρείες, όπως η Cisco, η Arista, και η Mellanox, διαθέτουν ήδη Ethernet switches στα 100 gigabits.
Facebook, meanwhile, has already deployed "several thousand" Wedge 100s in its data centers, as it wrote in social network blog today's Zhiping Yao network software and hardware engineer.
Facebook has also built its own servers to store data, inspired by its own needs.
And if you're thinking about Facebook's needs, of course we're talking about speed and bandwidth.
The company currently has more than 1.550 millions active users every month, and these users want to post videos, which need speed to display quickly.
So, material like Wedge 100 seems to make sense.
