Matt Gilligan, co-founder of Circanews, described in Medium last Thursday how the Facebook application destroyed its battery iPhone, even when the refresh was disabled, which is supposed to run in the background and not consume power. No one could figure out what was causing the problem, and Facebook simply said it was looking into the issue.

Now, the company has submitted an explanation.

Ari Grant, Facebook's technical director, wrote to Facebook Post today that the company has determined that the issue is caused by two things. The first is something called a "CPU spin" which Grant described as working as follows:

"The CPU Spin is like a child in a car constantly asking: Have we arrived? Have we arrived? Have we arrived? without getting an answer. This repetition of the process forces the battery to empty ".

The second issue was how the app manages audio channels on iOS. According to Grant, when you watch a video from the Facebook app and then close it, the app sometimes leaves an audio channel open. This feature is often used by applications music, but in the case of Facebook, it was unintentional and resulted in battery drain.

"We are sorry for the inconvenience," Grant wrote. "We are committed to continuing to improve the battery life of our application and there is a significant improvement in the version currently available."
