Facebook has just announced a boost to its standalone app Facebook Messenger with free video calls. The launch of the new product for Facebook was carried out by Stan Chudnovsky, Head of Product of the Messenger app and Param Reddy, Engineering Manager.
"Video calls in Messenger are coming today for iOS and Android users in Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, France, Greece, Ireland, Laos, Lithuania, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, the United Kingdom, the United States and Uruguay. "
The developer Facebook Messenger Stan Chudnovsky and Technical Director Param Reddy wrote in the statement:
"It will be released in other countries in the coming months."
Android apps and iOS app stores have not yet been updated with the new feature.
This particular release seems to make sense when you think about Facebook's increasing focus on its standalone Messenger app. Last month, at congress F8 developers, Facebook unveiled the new Messenger Platform, and shortly after announced the first Application web client.
So it was probably expected to add video calls to Messenger as Facebook sees Snapchat's move to continue to grow.
In addition, there is also a livestreaming feature on Twitter from Periscope and Meerkat startup.
