Facebook activated its “Safety Check” feature on Sunday for the first time in the United States since the terrorist attack. attack at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
The Safety Check feature was first activated in October of 2014, allowing Facebook users to declare that they are safe after a natural disaster or a critical event. The feature allows searches for those who do not have access to the affected area.
In Orlando now, for those who didn't read the morning news, a terrorist armed with an automatic weapon killed 50 people in a packed gay club on Sunday. Police killed the Pulse nightclub terrorist, who was identified as Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old Florida resident and citizen of USA.
The incident quickly became a top trending topic on Facebook and the Twitter with the hashtag #PrayforOrlando.
Last year, Facebook pledged to turn on Safety Check more frequently during disasters in response to criticism that while it allowed it to run after attacks of Islamic State terrorists in Paris did not operate the service a day earlier, when a bomb killed at least 43 people in Beirut.
