According to the FBI, Cryptowall developers have been earning so far only from US 18 million dollars.
The Cryptolocker family of ransomware has been characterized as one of the most productive and capable ever since it was first identified in April of 2014.
World damage caused by US service is much greater. Victims from Australia account for about half of Cryptowall's revenue, while North America accounts for a quarter.
The federal states report that the US Internet Crime Complaints Commission has received 992 complaints from ransomware victims that have been asking for ransom from 200 to 10.000 dollars.
"Many of the victims incur additional costs associated with their network protection, network countermeasures, loss of productivity, legal costs, IT services, the purchase of surveillance services - and credit for employees or their customers." says the FBI warning.
"Between April 2014 and June 2015, IC3 received 992 complaints about Cryptowall, with total losses of over $ 18.000.000."
"These financial fraud schemes target both individuals and businesses, and are usually very successful, having a significant impact on victims.”
It should be mentioned that Cryptowall, like other malware in the ransomware family, is delivered via spam and exploit kits to encrypt whatever they find in front of them, in the hope that some of them are valuable files. Victims must pay a ransom to regain access to their files.
Those who refuse to pay the ransom, in addition to losing their files forever, may also lose the login credentials of various accounts, as FAREIT was also recently discovered trojan to accompany Cryptowall.
