FBI Director James Comey revealed today that the FBI spent over a million dollars to break Syed Farook's iPhone. After nearly a month, the feds failed to discover anything significant on the device.
The phone, which was the cause of a dispute between Apple and the FBI and which occupied all the media recently, was ultimately of no value to the investigations, as it did not contain data that could link Farook to radical Islamic terrorist groups.
The FBI has always argued that unlocking Farook's phone could save lives of American citizens from future attacks.
But the attempt to break it has proved to be completely useless. It cost, much more, without bringing any desired results.
Mr. Comey did not directly mention her price of the tool used to hack the iPhone, but we can draw the conclusion for ourselves from the answer he gave to a question at a security conference held in London.
When asked how much FBI paid for the tool he used to unlock the device, Mr. Comey replied:
"A lot, more than I will get until I retire, that is, in seven years and four months, that is for sure."
The rest is just math. Comey gets about $180.000 a year, and has 7,3 years left on the job. service.
Total 1.3 million dollars.
