The new Slackware 14.2 Linux is here! Slackware Linux 14.2 comes two and a half months after the mid-April release of the second and final Release Candidate (RC) build. The stable release is finally here and is currently supported with LTS Linux Kernel 4.4.14.
But let's see what the new Slackware 14.2 brings.
The new distribution is supported by: GNU C Library 2.23, X.Org 7.7, GGC 5.3.0 as the default compiler, LLVM / Clang, Apache 2.4.20, 6.5.23, 5.22.2, 2.7.11, 2.2.5, 1.9.4, 2.9.0, Mercurial 3.8.2, KDE Software Compilation 4.14.21 desktop environment, and more.
Best of all, we see in the test list that there is support for the Linux kernel 4.6.
As we can see from the notes version, there is no sign of the next generation systemd init in Slackware 14.2, and it looks like the OS uses a combination of eudev, udisks, and udisks2, as well as several freedesktop.org specifications. This will allow system administrators to use different hardware devices, such as MP3 players, USB drives, CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drives, and more.
The x86_64 version supports UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface), and the latest NetworkManager is available offering users support for a wide range of network connections, including IPv6, VPN, mobile broadband, wired and wireless networks, support for encrypted network connections, thanks to OpenVPN technologies, OpenSSH, OpenSSL, and GnuPG.
You can also find known open source applications, SeaMonkey 2.40, Mozilla Firefox ESR 45.2.0, Mozilla Thunderbird 45.1.1, Pidgin 2.10.12, GIMP 8.2.16, HexChat 2.12.1, XSane 0.999, 0.139 Pan, GKrellM 2.3.7, and many more.
