The data was collected by ATLAS Threat Monitoring System of Arbor Networks, a product of cooperation between 300 customers - service providers, who share anonymous traffic data with Arbor.

The ATLAS collects statistics corresponding to 90TB / sec Internet traffic and provides data for Digital Attack Map, a map of all the global traffic attacks and created in partnership with Google Ideas.

Key findings of ATLAS in the first half of 2014:
  • During the first half of 2014, most volumetric DDoS attacks were observed, with more than 100 attack reports above 100GB / sec so far
  • In the middle of 2014, the attacks were more than 20GB / sec, in relation to the entire 2013
  • The largest attack recorded in the second quarter was of the order of 154,69GB / sec, reduced by 101% compared to the first quarter of 2014. More specifically this was a reflection attack on NTP protocol that occurred in Spain
  • Reflection attacks in NTP protocols are still significant, but their size and breadth has fallen relative to the first quarter of 2014. Average NTP traffic volume is declining globally, but is not yet returning to November levels of 2013 (before NTP attacks begin to multiply)
  • During the second quarter of 2014, fewer major attacks were observed - with an average of their size being reduced by 47% compared to the first quarter of 2014
