A new vulnerability to phones Nexus of Google was first mentioned by PC World. Phones are vulnerable to a theory attack which the protocol uses Flash SMS. Bulk sending about 30 of these specials to the target phone messages, an attacker can force the phone to reboot or lose network connection.
Bogdan Alecu, an IT systems administrator at the Dutch computer company Levi9, discovered the vulnerability and will present it in a speech at DefCamp at the international hacking conference to be held in Bucharest.
The Flash SMS protocol, also known as Class 0 SMS, is a category of text messages that appear on the recipient's screen but are not stored on the phone. They can be used for temporary or transient messages, like let's say to get a weather alert. The attack is largely theoretical, since the mission of multiple Class 0 SMS it's not as easy as spamming with a button we can send too many messages. While it does not seem to be easy to break a phone in such a way, Google will likely fix its vulnerability to its devices soon.
