In Ceyla, the invitation for free wireless access (Wi-Fi) on the Internet
Soon all citizens will have free internet access in 4.000 outdoor and / or closed public spaces throughout the territory, such as squares, pedestrian streets, playgrounds, municipal libraries, museums etc. In particular, the selection of points (wi-fi hotspots) concerns areas from 302 Municipalities of the country (out of a total of 325) that they indicated themselves, 100 archaeological sites and museums, and 200 areas of ports and marinas.
Today, the invitation for the "National Network of Wireless Internet Access Points Wi-Fi Hotspots" was published in "Diavgeia", which invites the potential operators of the project to submit the relevant actions in order for the specific project to be financed by the NSRF.
The inclusion of the program in the NSRF, which was delayed for many months – at least six – as they were not easy to find money and for the 13 regions, it was done by order of the new Deputy Minister of Development Odysseus Konstantinopoulos.
The Secretary of State responsible for the NSRF has had ongoing meetings in the last few days with service agents and eventually found a solution for the program to cover regions and 13 regions of the whole country and not just 8 for which there was no problem anyway. The Prime Minister Antonis Samaras himself, who has shown a special interest, was also immediately informed of the positive development and breakthrough of the issue.
The project budget is at 25 million euro instead of 15 originally presented.
Note that some municipalities, including the Municipality of Athens, do not participate in the program either because they have already implemented their own program to provide wireless internet access or because they are implementing it now.
How will citizens enter the Internet?
Citizens will be able to connect for a period of 30 minutes, provided they are within 20 meters of the indoor access point and 100 meters outside.
Each point will be able to serve approximately 40 to 50 users at the same time who will be able to:
-Only have access to the internet but with restrictions for inappropriate content, streaming files, etc., as well as a limitation to the maximum speed of 1 to 1,5 Mbps.
-Do have access to local and city information
-To have access to services from the municipality.
Later, Wi-Fi is also expanded to large areas of special interest and special technical and functional network and equipment requirements (event venues or tourist facilities, open-air sports facilities, etc.).
Wi-Fi and in public transport
End, Wi-fi will have the buses and trunks in the coming months, all metro stations and the electric railway (currently have seven) and tram stops.
What the prime minister said last year
It is recalled that in November 2013, on telvisual In his interview, Prime Minister Mr. Samaras had committed to free wireless wi-fi internet throughout Greece. More specifically, responding to a journalist's comment about the mistrust young people show in the political system, Mr. Samaras said: "Today I can promise them that we will have free wireless wi-fi internet in Greece. All over Greece in one year". The Prime Minister insisted that this announcement will be implemented, saying "we will do it. And that's why I said it. It will be done. I've looked it up to say. It is something that is very important. And it shows young people that someone cares. I'm not saying Samaras, it doesn't matter Samaras or which party. Cares. That there is a Greece that cares for these children. Otherwise we got burned."
