Twitter has canceled the Geofeedia service's agreement to access its data, as there were reports that the information collected by company are used for police surveillance.
Last Monday, the Daily Dot reported that the US Department of Denver has filed 30.000 dollars at the startup to access its software that provides information through online shops and social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
The Geofeedia service offers location-based capabilities searchIt's something that law enforcement can use to conduct what's called “geo-fencing” and make arrests through media reports, pinpointing specific areas from comments, videos and images.
According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Geofeedia has accessed the Instagram API, Facebook (Feed API) and the Twitter database through an agreement.
However, these tools were used by Geofeedia to have data for sale to third parties, or even in quarters, who knows.
Instagram, Facebook and Twitter have now canceled their contracts with the company, stopping any access to users' public data.
What would happen if the Daily Dot was not revealed? Do you really believe that social media did not know Geofaedia's activities?
