The GitHub which now belongs Microsoft has finally transferred the code that exists in all active public repositories on the site to a "treasury" in Norway.
GiHub announced the archiving plan last November and on February 20 sent the first 21 terabytes written in 186 separate films.
GitHub has canceled plans to store all "the world's open source code in the Arctic" due to the coronavirus pandemic. The company's associates received the films in boxes and deposited them in one old vault on July 8.
The archival vault exists in Norway's Svalbard, a group of islands that is also home to the world's bank seeds.
"The code arrived in Longyearbyen, a town of a few thousand people in Svalbard, and was picked up by a local logistics company that took them for an intermediate safe overnight storage”, said Julia Metcalf, GitHub Strategic Program Director.
"The next morning, he traveled to the mountain treasury and then to a deep-frozen cabin. That's where the code is right now and it will stay there for over 1.000 years. "
The repository includes public active code repositories as well as significant inactive repositories. The file consists of the HEAD of the default branch of each repository, minus any binary sizes larger than 100kB in size.
Each repository is then packaged as a single TAR file and for search and retrieval efficiency, most of the data will be stored as QR codes.
A human-readable index and guide will detail the location of each repository and explain how one can retrieve the data.
