The Like today mentions for today:

The identification of the Valentine's Day commemorating the Day of the Lovers began from England in the late Middle Ages, with pagan and Christian references.

In the years of the Roman Empire, from 13 to 15 February, they celebrated the Lupercalia in honor of the god Faunus (the Pan of the Greeks). The Romans sacrificed goats and dogs, while young boys beat young goats with goatskin strips to transmit their fertility. An analogous feast also existed in Ancient Athens in the month of Gamilionas (corresponded to the second half of January and the first of February); Theogamia, in honor of Zeus and Hera.

The celebration was abolished by the Church in the 5th century AD, as pagan. In its place (February 14) came the commemoration of Saint Valentine, martyr of the Christian faith from Rome, by decision of Pope Gelasius. Valentine, according to legend, was a priest of the 3rd century, who, in defiance of imperial orders, agreed to marry young lovers, thus saving the males from military service. In other words, he was a true patron of lovers and conscientious objectors, as we would say today! Another legend says that while Valentine was in prison, refusing to renounce his faith, he fell in love with the blind daughter of his jailer, to whom he even sent a with the signature: With love from your Valentino.
