Google announced yesterday and was released today the new Google Photos app for photos and videos, as well as its corresponding web service as a stand-alone service cut off from its social network companys Google+.
Unlimited free storage for your photos and videos was without a doubt the most important announcement of the company.
The offer comes in a detail that you should know as the storage service is provided free of charge if certain conditions are met.
Photos should be up to 16 megapixels and will not be counted in the storage quota.
Videos with resolution up to 1080p will not be counted in the quota as well.
The new service supports auto-connect optionspressures, photos, and videos if they don't meet these above requirements, so casual users don't have to worry about resolution or file size (the same doesn't apply to professionals, though).
If the camera produces photos with a resolution of 36 megapixels, for example, they will automatically be converted to a lower resolution if you have selected the "unlimited storage" option (Google calls it a High Quality option)
Note: Compressed versions of photos are automatically created, regardless of the size of the photo. You can easily test it by uploading a high-resolution photo using the web application or service.

What happens when you upload a photo that is larger than 16 megapixels?
When uploading an image to Google Photos that is greater than 16 megapixels, it will automatically be converted by the service if you have selected unlimited storage.
This is due to the 16 megapixel limitation of the service, as the maximum resolution for 16MP images is 4920 × 3264.
This means that the original photos should not be saved in Google Photos.
What can you do if you want to upload some photos to their original size?
If you want to upload photos without compression, then you should change the quality preference to by clicking here of Google Photos or from the application settings.

The settings you make will be automatically saved to the entire account. This means that you can not use the send settings for just one device.
If you use the mobile app, you can do the following to change the shipping size:
Tap the menu icon in the app and select Settings from the menu to open.
Select Back up & sync when the main settings page opens
You can find the shipping size listed as one of the options for the next page.

Some mobile devices support high respsolutions photos and videos, but most don't anymore (unless you're a pro).
This in turn means that most of you can use the unlimited storage option offered by Google Photos without having to worry about backing up your original photos or videos as the originals will be stored directly on Google Photos.
