“Hack the Pentagon” is one of rewarding the people who will manage to breach the security. Usually such competitions are held by large US companies, which wish to discover gaps in the security of their networks.

These things allow cyber experts to find and diagnose problems before malicious hackers discover them, saving time and money in the event of a damaging breach.

"I am confident that this innovative initiative will strengthen our digital defenses and ultimately enhance our national security," Defense Secretary Ash Carter said in a statement announcing the pilot program.

The US Pentagon has long been testing the security of its networks with its in-house red groups. Hack the Pentagon will, however, open at least a part of the huge IT system network to the cyber challenges across the security industry and the academic world.

"The goal is not to compromise any aspect of our critical systems, but to challenge our cyber security in a new and innovative way," the official said.

The initiative is led by the Pentagon's Defense Digital Agency (DDS), which was established last November to bring industry experts to of the US in the military for short terms.
