New deadline for submission of proposals in the #HackEKT Application Competition for Open Data & Science & Culture Repositories

The HackEKT Competition is organized by the National Documentation Center with the aim of further exploiting and highlighting the open sets of data of repositories of scientific and cultural content that it develops. Five cash prizes totaling 25.000 Euro will be awarded in the five proposals for their implementation.

The emblematic repositories and content services developed by the ECB in the context of its institutional role for the collection, documentation and safe deposit of the country's prestigious content include, among others, the National Archive of Doctoral Dissertations, the ILIOS Repository of the EIE, the repository of the Parthenon Frieze, the Archive Repository of the K. Simitis Foundation, the electronic e-publishing platform that hosts over 16 open access scientific journals s, the online portals argo.ekt.gr and openarchives.gr.

This enormous amount of content is an extremely important tool for research, education, entertainment and information. The aim of the competition is to develop innovative ways of searching, navigating and re-using data from individual user communities, such as the research and educational community.

Contest #HackEKT (http://saas.ekt.gr/content/contests) are open to participation, but are particularly invited to involve multidisciplinary teams of developers, librarians, archivists and editors of digital museum collections who have a good understanding of the operation of digital repositories and libraries and are aware of the needs of individual people who use them.

The HackEKT competition includes the following five thematic categories that use the open data sets and ESF repositories:

  1. EKT_le @ rn: Creation of educational web or mobile applications that leverage primary scientific or cultural content content and meta which is available from the ECB repositories, offering new easy-to-use ways to search and navigate content.
  2. ECB Cre @ tive: Creating applications that leverage scientific and cultural data in relating to the creative industry or tourism.
  3. visualizeARGO: Visualization of bibliographic data from the bibliographic directories and archives of the EKT library available through the argo.ekt.gr portal.
  4. RepKPIs: Digital Repository Software Extensions (DSpace 4.x) for Rep multimedia data, the enrichment of files or the production of statistics related to the material of the repositories and the interaction of users. These extensions will be able to be customized according to the administrator's requirements. Statistics should be available in multiple formats (eg Json, xml). At the same time, it should be possible to develop appropriate plugins for downloading and managing the application's statistics from the collectd software and they should also be available through extensions of the SNMP protocol.
  5. RepSearch: Digital repository software extensions with new user-friendly ways of navigating content and ESF data.

Only natural persons (not legal entities) regardless of nationality, residing and operating in Greece, having all the legal conditions for this, are entitled to participate in the competition.

Interested individuals can participate in the HackEKT competition either individually or in groups up to 5. Interested parties are invited to carefully study the detailed terms of the competition that follow and submit their proposals / applications electronically by Monday 5 October 2015 (23.59 hour of Greece) according to the terms described on the digital platform of the competition http://saas.ekt.gr/content/contests. Participation in the contest involves the unconditional acceptance of all terms and the commitment of the participants.

The HackEKT competition will feature five (5) total winners based on a rating, one in each category, each receiving a five-thousand-dollar (5.000) cash prize. The awards will be awarded at a relative award ceremony that will take place after the end of the competition.

The HackEKT competition is held in the framework of Sub-Project 4 of the Operation "Platform for the Provision of Services for the Deposit, Management and Distribution of Open Public Documentation and Digital Content", which is implemented by the ESF and is part of the Operational Program "Digital with" co-financing of Greece and the European Union.
