Common HTTP errors and what they mean

Listed below are the most common error codes 4xx and 5xx.

Note: The HTTP status codes starting with 1, 2, and 3 exist but we will not mention them as you will not meet them.

400 (Bad Request)

The HTTP 400 Bad Request status code means the request sent to the server to open a webpage was somewhat inappropriate.
So the server can not understand the request, could not edit it and instead of opening the page you requested gives the 400 error.

401 (unauthorized access)

The HTTP status code, 401 Unauthorized Access means that the page you are trying to view cannot be loaded until you log in with a valid username and password .
If you have just logged in and received the 401 error message, it means the credentials you provided were not valid. This means you do not have an account on your website, or your username or password was incorrect.

403 (Forbidden)

The HTTP 403 Forbidden status code means that access to the page or resources you are trying to open is completely forbidden.
In other words, the 403 error means you can not access what you are trying to view.

404 (Not Found)

404 Not Found means that the page you are trying to open can not be found on the server you are looking for. This is the most popular HTTP status code that exists.

408 (Request Timeout)

408 Request Timeout indicates that your request has been sent to the site but it has not arrived and the time has passed. In other words, an 408 error means that the link to the website took more time than the site's server was prepared to expect.

500 (Internal Server Error)

500 Internal server error is a very general HTTP status code and means that something went wrong to the server, and the server could not be more specific in recognizing the problem.
The 500 Internal Server Error Message is the most common “server-side” error you will see.

502 (Bad Gateway)

The HTTP status code, 502 Bad Gateway means that the server received an invalid response from another accessed server while trying to load the web page or complete another browser request. In other words, the 502 error is an issue between two different servers on the Internet that do not communicate properly.

503 (Service Unavailable)

503 Service Unavailable means that the web server is not currently available. 503 errors are typically due to temporary overload or maintenance on the server.

504 (Gateway Timeout)

The 504 Gateway Timeout error code on HTTP means that a server does not receive a timely response from another accessed server while trying to load the web page or fill out another browser request.
