Iran: data only on our servers… Last year, Iran blocked the use of the Telegram app and many other social networks when their administrators refused to help the Iranian authorities spy on the country's citizens.
As it seems, the Iranian government wants tighter controls on all messaging and social media applications operating in the country, and is trying to give the authorities a wider track record? and censorship of its citizens.
Thus, all messaging and social media applications operating in Iran have one year to proceed with "activity data" linked to Iranian citizens on servers in Iran, according to Reuters.
In order to comply with new regulations, companies will need to create data centers within Iran within a year, and their applications may lose a large number of users by storing data on Iranian servers.
However transport data on Iranian servers may not be enough, as some of the most popular messaging services such as WhatsApp, Apple's iMessage, and Telegram offer end-to-end encrypted communication meaning that no one in between can read the content of messages.
Just two weeks ago Iranian authorities arrested eight Women for engaging in modeling photo viewing online which is considered a violation of Islamic law. The women did not wear the obligatory headscarf, so their Instagram page was shut down, along with their Facebook pages.
