Within the framework of actions to celebrate the International Year of Light 2015, the National Observatory of Athens (NSA) participates in the European experimental campaign iSPEX organized by the University of Leiden under the auspices of UNESCO and invites the Athenians to take part in the action.
The aim of the International Year is to highlight, at a global level, the way in which light and the technologies they affect every aspect of human life.
The campaign iSPEX to be held in Athens, aims to create a strong citizen-observers of urban air pollution. To this end, the IAADET Institute of NCA has undertaken the provision of iSPEX devices to Athenians who own iPhone 4 / 4s / 5 / 5s mobile devices.
CEPOL aspires to maintain the national iSPEX network for the monitoring and systematic mapping of atmospheric incidents in Athens to provide services related to citizens' health.
In addition, it is expected that the data collected by the iSPEX Citizen Observatory will contribute to the optimization of satellite observations collected daily by the CEPOL BEYOND Center of Excellence.
In this way, observer citizens will be actively involved in the research carried out in the NCA for the benefit of society and the environment.
The measurements in the Attic sky will take place from September 1 to October 15, throughout the day. However, it is advisable to take place either early in the morning between 7-11am, or late in the afternoon between 4-8pm. At least two readings per day are required.
The result of the measurements is shown in Fig mobile screen
Upon completion of the experiment, all iSPEX measurements will be analyzed and processed by NCA in order to create aerosol maps for Athens. The final maps will be published at Greek and to Europeanby clicking here respectively.
To participate in the action, you must obtain an iSPEX device distributed by the National Observatory of Athens (Contact: ispex@noa.gr) and then download the corresponding application available in Greek at App Store (iSPEC compatibility only for iPhone 4/4s/5/5s).
All you have to do is measure the particles by following the instructions in the user manual inside the iSPEX package. Instructions are available in English and in English the CEPOL website.
