At SXSW today, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange spoke through Skype from the Ecuador Embassy in London. The main topic of the discussion was government internet surveillance, and Assange raised some interesting issues.
He said the most significant change in the last decade has been the politicization of the Internet, as evidenced by WikiLeaks, Edward Snowden and Glenn Greenwald. He noted that Greenwald and other national security journalists should leave the United States to avoid fear of arrest because of the "growing militarism of the United States and the United Kingdom."
Assange referred to Internet surveillance as "an incursion into our human society," and said that "now that human society and the Internet have merged. The laws of the Internet are becoming the laws of human society. ”
Assange within the walls of the Ecuadorian embassy seems to be continuing his activities, as he stated that WikiLeaks is preparing to release "important" material. But he did not want to give a timeline for the upcoming revelations.
We should note something that was quite ironic. While Assange criticized NSA's spy actions, the Skype logo appeared above his head.
George is still wondering what he is doing here….
