The US government does not trust Microsoft's security

Recently there have been some very serious security breaches of Microsoft's online services, along with attacks on the company's email accounts for top executives.

A new publication claims that these hacking attacks have caused some concerns for Microsoft's government customers in the US, who pay a lot of money annually for these systems.

In accordance with paywalled Information (via SeekingAlpha), the problems started in July 2023, when a hacker group based in China used an MSA key they obtained to forge their own tokens. This resulted in them gaining access to Outlook email accounts in the US and Europe, including emails from government agencies such as the US State Department.

Today's publication claims, through anonymous sources, that the State Department has already transferred some of its data to Microsoft's competitors, such as Google and its cloud services, as well as Amazon's (AWS) services. It is also preparing to select a company for a seven-year, $10 billion contract for cloud, productivity and security services.

Officially, a State Department spokesperson said it will continue to use Microsoft applications while also supporting "a diverse cloud ecosystem."

Last, a hacker group based in Russia gained access to email accounts of top Microsoft executives. The company later admitted that hackers used information from those emails to gain access to some of its source code.

Today's publication claims that some of the emails included messages from Microsoft executives to US government officials. The hackers reportedly used this information to try to gain access to government services.

The post also says that some major Microsoft customers want to use a different security login system to access the company's services than Microsoft's Entra ID. Currently, Microsoft does not allow these companies to completely replace Entra ID with another competing system, such as those offered by Okta or Cloudflare.
