Data transmission to our solar system will soon be done with laser

According to officials from the US Space Agency (NASA), a plan is in place, whose purpose is to prove that communications in our solar system can be made at the speed of light. The demonstration spacecraft is scheduled to launch 2017.

The Laser Relay Broadcast Demonstration (LcrD = Laser Communications Relay Demonstration) προσπαθεί να αποδείξει ότι εστιασμένες ακτίνες λέιζερ μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν επιτυχώς για τη μετάδοση πέρα από το ηλιακό σύστημα, πολύ πιο γρήγορα από ό, τι γίνεται σήμερα με τα ραδιοκύματα ή με άλλες μεθόδους.  Για παράδειγμα, σήμερα χρειάζεται περίπου 8 έως 10 λεπτά για τα those emitted from Earth to reach the robot located on Mars.

These times could be significantly reduced, say NASA researchers. The LcrD mission was created precisely to achieve this goal. Although it will be just a test spacecraft, success or failure will determine to a great extent whether we will continue to dream of using laser to communicate in space.

 NASA's mission is scheduled to begin no earlier than 2017, from a commercial satellite. LCDR largely aims to follow in the footsteps of the highly successful "Laser Lunar Demonstration" mission (LLCD = Lunar Laser Communications Demonstration), which was also developed by NASA.
