Migrating Programs to a New Operating System - Introducing PickMeApp

Despite the ever-faster installation times of newer Windows operating systems, users always resent knowing they'll spend an entire afternoon switching . Their biggest headache is when they have to install in the new environment and all its applications are running.

Many solutions are available on the market, and some of them are quite sophisticated to automatically create the new environment, and to integrate the system's applications and settings.

Today we will introduce one to you free software, the  PickMeApp, which is an alternative that only focuses on the recording of existing installed programs, leaving all the customization settings of the new OS to the user.

PickMeApp runs in an easy-to-use environment with easy-to-read tabs, but keep in mind that the program also offers you third-party software during its installation. From what we've seen, it promotes a browser toolbar, (it can change your browser's homepage and default search engine) as well as a registry cleaner.

Generally in free programs, if you pass the commercials during installation you're done, but in the case of PickMeApp, the promotion extends to normal use of the software.

Handling all his work PickMeApp should not create a problem for an average user. The  PickMeApp works by collecting all the details of your installed applications on a profile.

It shows you in one tab its own collection of programs that are already tested and compatible for moving to the new different operating system.

Judging by the scrolling line he has, his list is quite large, but is still far from the average user's requirements.

It includes basic programs, mostly free, such as Adobe Reader, 7-Zip, KeePass, FileZilla, GIMP, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Avast! free Antivirus, Thunderbird email client, web browsers, etc. However, we also found some non-free ones in the list, such as WinRAR.

One of the best trumps is that you can install automatically in this collection any of the applications you are interested in. PickMeApp will do all the hard work. On the other hand, it has the disadvantage that not all of its applications are on its list in their latest releases.

During our testing, the program was unable to secure all our programs on our PC. You can see the full list of them compatible programs before using it.

After recording the software in the old operating system, you can save the details in a special format that can be opened by PickMeApp in the new operating system. Alternatively, everything can be packed into a self-extracting file which will then be opened without the help of the program.

So the list of all programs to be installed is available at the beginning of the process in the new operating system. One downside is that you can't block any app from the list in case you change your mind.

If you have decided to use PickMeApp to migrate to a new operating system, you should keep in mind that software compatibility with the new operating system is a prerequisite.

The same result is achieved when moving data from a newer operating system to a previous version (downgrade e.g. on Windows XP) or between 32-bit and 64-bit platforms.

Setting options are insignificant, you will not care much unless you go to the advanced menu, where you can download software and install settings with your personal settings.

The advanced menu is deactivated by default, but our recommendation is to enable these two options because it can save you a lot of time after migrating from one OS to another.

That is, you will need to spend some time gathering the details of the components that do not work in the new operating system. Individual work that you would do anyway if you performed a manual installation and configuration of these programs.

The entire work progress is visible at the bottom of the main screen with the date and time for each step of the process. In addition, it provides you with a history of all activities so you can see which programs have been processed.

As a tool, we found it particularly useful for professional computer technicians who will at some point be required to switch to a stack of computers from a company or organization, and in the shortest possible time.

In Pro:

The application does not require installation and can also be used as portable. It's easy to use and also to collect and transfer its current program settings. You can save the exported profiles for as long as you want and you can save them as a self-extracting file that can be opened without PickMeApp.

The following:

Has an insistence on promoting third-party software, on our screen came a promotion to install advertising applications even when we started the first image of the program. The list of supported applications is mostly limited to freebies and much of the commercial software we had in our testing system was not included.

Generally:

In fact, it is not the most reliable application for computers with highly specialized programs, but it can provide a useful helping hand for the beginner and even for the average user. With up-to-date information about OS compatibility as well as the ability to power it with this information, it can become a reliable and popular tool, especially for less advanced users.
