According to AV-Comparatives research, two-thirds of antivirus apps for Android are not working properly. Some are even referred to as viruses.
It is prudent to secure your Android phone with an antivirus software, but which of all the running applications can you rely on? The company AV-Comparatives tested 250 antivirus applications, for the Google platform and only 80 of them (just under a third) passed the site's core templates. Only these were able to detect more than the 30% of the malware that released 2018 and had zero, false positives. Some of the applications examined by the researchers were detected as viruses.
In some cases, the failure ratio of 70% of the apps examined is simple: they do not scan the application code. AV-Comparatives have found that these applications are based on white or black apps lists, which are sometimes very general.
The applications that passed the test are apparently from well-known security companies, with big names such as AVG, Kaspersky, McAfee, Symantec, ESET, etc., which achieved 100% performance. Many of the ones that didn't pass were written by amateurs, poor copies of their counterparts, or by companies that clearly aren't focused on security. Thirty-two of the apps tested have disappeared two months after the test, which took place in January.

Google at least tries to verify that the apps it hosts don't harm users or break the law, but it can't enforce a basic level of quality needed to keep your phone safe.
