The University of Northwestern designed the Motion Contrast 3D Scanning (MC3D) camera, which is very cost-effective and offers higher quality imaging. The impressive thing is that it has the ability to work on light of the sun.
Kinect works by displaying a grid of infrared light spots on a scene. Then it measures the time it takes light from each of these points to turn back (reflection) into the sensor of the camera sensor.
Most professional systems can have high resolution images using just one laser, which sweeps back and forth across a stage. Because of this, these systems are hindered by moving objects.
The MC3D, however, follows a completely different approach to the scanning laser. At first it stores a scene and evaluates the three-dimensional depth of all the objects within it. The laser then scans only the areas where visual changes are detected (if detected).
This way is similar to how the human eye works.
"If you send the same message over and over again, the neurons will stop caring," says Professor Oliver Cossairt, head of the program.
“Neurons record only if there is a change in your visual stimulation. We realized that this principle could be really useful for a 3D scan system. ”
In addition, because the laser is so bright that the MC3D can be used outdoors in bright sunlight. In contrast, with Kinect infrared lasers that do not work on sunny surfaces.
