The NASA flying disc is called LDSD (Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator), it uses rockets for its movement and its assembly was completed at the American Navy's Pacific Missile Range Facility in Hawaii.
The LDSD is to perform three-week trials and simulations before its maiden flight on June 3. The purpose of the program, completed under the supervision of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, is to explore innovative technologies that could be used in missions to Mars.
The June flight test will include a balloon that will take the test vehicle to 36,576 (120.000) feet. There, the vehicle will be left in the void, and the built-in rocket propellers will take it to 54,864 (180.000 feet), achieving 4 Mach acceleration. At this height the LDSD is going to perform a series of automated tests.
The specific heights for testing have been chosen as the stratospheric upper layers are the only ones that most closely resemble the conditions of the Red Planet's mild atmosphere.
