Last week we learned about the permanent closure of the popular tracker YTS, as well as the streaming service popcorn Time.
The closure of the two sites, as we first knew, began with the splitting of the Popcorn Time development team. But no one knew exactly what caused the split. 
But today, according to Variety, we know the cause that is no other than the cinema industry.
MPAA contacted Popcorn Time on 16 October after filing three separate pipelines in Canada and told him he would have to stop his services within the month.
He also filed a lawsuit against YTS in New Zealand.
MPAA Chairman Chris Dodd said their moves are aimed at fighting online piracy:
Popcorn Time and YTS are illegal platforms for a clear reason: to distribute Stolen copies of the latest movies and TV shows, without compensating the people who worked hard to create them.
The complaints filed coincided with the decision of the Popcorn Time programmers to leave the site.
Some of these developers developed Butter, which is designed to circumvent many of the legal issues Popcorn Time had (ie, active connections and streaming illegal content) by making streaming legal content, again using torrent.
How will this be done no one knows. However, developers give hope to friends of the service:
