RansomFree: Free protection from ransomware

RansomFree is a new free program for Microsoft's operating system that will help protect your computer from ransomware attacks.

The program is fully compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10.

The protection it adds to the system is interesting as it creates a series of files in the system that monitor each change.ransomfree

These files use characters that place them at the top of the folder structure. The idea is that ransomware attacks the files using the same structure after the attack.

The Ransomfree application places popular file formats, docx, doc, SQL, xls, and so on in folders that are often targeted to ransomware attacks.

According to Cybereason, the application can protect you from 40 ransomware executives. These include: Locky, Cryptowall, TeslaCrypt, Jigsaw and Cerber.

Malicious applications are identified by their (known) behavior patterns. The Ransomfree process runs in the background, and monitors your system's folders for any changes. The application will block any process that modifies the folders or files it tracks.

What does "the latest version of Windows" really mean?

So in theory at least it could prevent ransomware from "actually" infecting your system by using honeypots. This of course depends to a large extent on how the ransomware works. Mention that malware developers may well change ransomware behavior by continuing to play cat and mouse…
