Sophos, the company that acquired Sandboxie, our well-known sandboxing software and technology from Invincea in 2017, released the source code of the application to the public.
Created by Ronan Tzur, Sandboxie was first released as a tool for his sandbox Internet Explorer το 2004. Η λειτουργικότητα του προletterhas been extended over the years so that Windows users can use it to sandbox all Windows applications.
Sophos released the Sandboxie app as a freeware in 2019 and promised to release the app's source code sometime later. So the time has come and Source Code Sandboxie is now available for download. Interested users can download it from official webpage.
Sophos also published a FAQ that answers some of the questions that existing and new Sandboxie users may have. The company says that in communication with "community members" it made Sandboxie available "through an open source program in the community".
The latest version of Sandboxie by Sophos is 5.33.3 and it works on Windows 7, 8.1 and 10. All the features found in the commercial versions of Sandboxie are also present in this version. In other words, Sandboxie has turned into a completely free software. The source code version is 5.40 as the name suggests archiveU.
Updates, for bug fixes or improvements, from now on will be made by the community or other bodies that will use the code and continue to develop. Sophos plans to close the license server and the forum on June 1, 2020.
The company will keep the official website online until then, but plans to shut it down in the fall of 2020. By then, the community should have fully taken over the project.
From what I've seen, Sandboxie is being developed by a certain person named David Xanatos. I wonder if it is now safe for anyone to use it
