Snapchat discovered that they leaked payroll information of its staff when someone in the company's human resources department fell victim to phishing.
The company blog says:
"... it is with real regret and embarrassment that we report that one of our employees fell victim to one scams phishing and revealed some payroll information for our employees.”
"The good news is that our servers have not been compromised data of our users are completely unaffected by the event. ”
"The bad news is that a number of our employees have been compromised after their identity leaked. We are incredibly sorry and apologize. ”
Friday's attack was targeted at the company's payroll department. The malicious e-mail was signed by Evan Spiegel, the company's chief executive, requesting staff pay data.
Snapchat came in contact with those who are affected, and offers them two years of free insurance for identity theft and tracking their accounts.
"When that happens, all you have to do is acknowledge your mistake, take care of the people who are affected, and find out what went wrong."
Phishing is the preferred attack method for many but very advanced hacking attacks because man is the weakest link in security measures.
