Perhaps this is the first step for Elon Musk's crazy vision: a colony on Mars. SpaceX Managing Director has previously said he wants to bring the first person to the red planet until 2025.
The brief announcement states that the company plans to ship the spacecraft Dragon on Mars 2018.
This news is based on a single tweet from the company, so the evidence is slim. Still, it's an aggressive announcement from an independent company that has a proven track record record successes (but also failures).
