Research: One in three Greeks has not used a computer

One in three Greeks (34,4%) has never used a computer in their life and a corresponding percentage (36,3%) has never used the internet. This reveals of the Observatory for the Administrative Reform of the Information Society S.A. held in 2013, on the use of new technologies by citizens.

  • In addition, research has shown that more women (40,8%) than men (35,9%) have never used the internet.
  • On the contrary, computer users systematically use the internet: 81% on a daily basis.
  • The personal computer remains the most popular internet access device (91,5% of users), while thanks to 3G technology and smart access via mobile devices is also increasing significantly (18,7%).
  • 61,5% say they have access to the internet from their home and 37,5% no.
  • In terms of age groups, about three out of four people aged 66 to 74 years (73,4%) say they do not have household access to the internet as well as the 57,3% of 55-65-year-olds, while the lowest non-access rate is for the new 16-25 (18,4%). Among the Internet users, 81% use it every day or almost every day and 14% a few times a week.

Although high technology illiteracy in our country remains high, the percentage of people purchasing goods or services for private use over the Internet, with more popular product categories such as clothing and footwear and electronic devices, is still increasing in Greece.

Greeks, following the trend of other European countries, prefer online purchases from home sellers and are driven mainly by the potentially lower prices. They make one to five online purchases per quarter and spend up to 500 euros overall on e-commerce.

Obtaining information about products and services (76,7%), e-mail (74,6%), reading e-magazines and newspapers (70.5%), entertainment (games-photos-music-movies - 63,9% ) and engaging with social networks such as Facebook (51,4%) are the five main online activities of users.

With regard to markets, the main motivation (76%) is to find lower prices than in physical stores. Almost half of consumers (45%) pay for their orders by cash on delivery, 29% by credit card and 25% by prepaid card. 27,5% of online shopping is done by domestic online stores.

The vast majority of citizens believe that thanks to online access, their dealings with the State improve (90%) and they gain greater participation in the public (88%). Regarding internet security, 60% state that they have faced such , while 40% do not.

In the field of education, more than half of Greek schools (54%) now have their own website, while 30% of students now use a 'smart' mobile phone in their.

The survey also focuses on individual population groups, elderly people, people with disabilities, immigrants, low-educated people and the unemployed, in order to highlight how they use the internet and their particular digital needs.
