Microsoft announced today that it plans to shut down Docs.com for a Sharing Service for Office documents at 15 December 2017.
Docs.com started as a collaboration between Microsoft and Facebook in April 2010. It was created using the Microsoft Office Web Apps platform, and allowed Facebook users to create, edit and share Microsoft Office documents.
Microsoft suspended Docs.com again from 2015, and started it back by supporting more features, such as OneDrive support for document retrieval and basic annotation support.
This time, however, Microsoft seems to have decided it well and will eventually withdraw Docs on 15 December 2017. So those who use it should transfer their content to Docs.com to other file storage and file sharing platforms as soon as possible.
Those using Docs will be able to log in from today June 9th until December 14th, 2017 to create copies security for all content they have on Docs.com in OneDrive. Your Docs.com account will be set to read-only when the transfer is complete, and the document links will automatically redirect to OneDrive.
Microsoft said that those who do not have enough available storage space at OneDrive should take care to empty their drive.
The main reason for shutting down Docs is that Microsoft believes SlideShare is the best service for publishing Office documents.
In addition, Microsoft believes that OneDrive is the right service for distributing documents that are stored.
For customized sharing, OneDrive offers additional tools, settings rights and security to share and protect your data and content.
