Microsoft announced the closure of Docs.com

Microsoft announced today that it plans to shut down Docs.com for a Sharing Service for Office documents at 15 December 2017.

Docs.com started as one between Microsoft and Facebook in April 2010. It was built using Microsoft's Office Web Apps platform, and allowed of Facebook to create, edit and share Microsoft Office documents.Docs.com

Microsoft suspended Docs.com again in 2015, and relaunched it supporting more , such as support for retrieving documents from OneDrive and basic annotation support.

But this time Microsoft seems to have decided for good and will finally retire the Docs service on Friday, December 15, 2017. So those who use it will have to transfer the content they have on Docs.com to other storage and sharing as soon as possible.

Anyone using Docs will be able to sign in from 9 June to 14 December of 2017 to back up all of the content they have on Docs.com to OneDrive. The Docs.com account will be set to read-only when the transfer is complete, and the document links will automatically be redirected to OneDrive.

Microsoft said that those who do not have enough available storage space at OneDrive should take care to empty their drive.

The main reason for shutting down Docs is that Microsoft believes SlideShare is the best service for publishing Office documents.

In addition, Microsoft believes that OneDrive is the right service for distributing documents that are stored.

For custom sharing, OneDrive offers additional tools, rights and security settings to share and protect your data and content.

Let's also mention that there are many available alternatives not only for Microsoft but also for other companies like Google with Google Docs.
