Last time we read a lot about the closing and KickassTorrents return. But what happens when TorrentFreak noticed that mods did not have access to the site's database? One of KickassTorrents' most popular clones (mirror) is a copy of PirateBay disguised as KAT. Although the site has the appearance of the KAT, it simply has content from Pirate Bay.
KickassTorrents went out of business after its alleged owner was arrested by the government of the US, earlier this month.
As usually happens after the closure of large torrent sites (Kickass, ThePirateBay and Demonoid) immediately appeared several copies hoping to take a share of the traffic of the original website. The same was done with KickassTorrents.
One of the most popular mirror sites is KAT.am. The page was characterized by several reputable pages as the official reincarnation of the KAT.
Let's see how reliable the information is:
Note: Because nothing goes beyond Hollywood, CAT is not currently working. However, the site continues to work with new domains: kickass.cd and kickass.mx.
Those visiting the site will observe the familiar environment of the KAT. However, a closer look shows that it is not even a mirror site. Not at least the CSD.
The site serves the content of The Pirate Bay.
This is best seen by comparing search results on and two websites. Without any exception, they return exactly the same exact results in the same order, with the same numbers of seeders and peers.
For example, a search for "TPB AFK" returns 64 results in the "mirror site" Kickass.mx.
The same search in Pirate Bay returns exactly the same results. Even the date of adding the torrent is exactly the same as in the "mirror site" of KAT.
For comparison, you can also do a search with the same term "tpb afk" in a real mirror of KAT.
The following screenshot is taken from Kickasstorrents.to, which is a true KAT mirror site and has no recent torrent. Results show torrents that have been uploaded by different users (not PirateBay users) and have a different number of seeders and peers.
With all of the above, it appears that the administrators of Kickass.mx and Kickass.cd are not entirely honest, as they do not appear to use the KAT database as they claim.
In any case, former users of KAT but also all those who use the internet should know that they should not believe that they are looking on the Internet, even if they read it on TheVerge or many other Greek "reliable" websites.
