TOP500 supercomputer: Once again, if you look for the fastest and most powerful computer, the TOP500 supercomputing ranking for June 2018 shows that Linux dominates the operating systems. In other words, every TOP500 supercomputing computer runs Linux.
Linux has been around for many years, but since November 2017 it was the first time that all TOP500 machines have used Linux. Before 2017 there were a few IBM AIX, a Unix variant, very low on the list.
For the future there is no doubt that Linux will continue to dominate supercomputing as there seems to be no competition.

In the latest TOP500 rankings, 56% of additional flops were a result of NVIDIA Tesla GPUs. This marks the first time that the GPU has surpassed the CPU in super performance computers.
For example, the new Summit champ is powered by boards running two IBM Power9 CPUs and six V100 GPUs. According to NVIDIA, 95% of peak performance (187,7 petaflops) comes from the system's 27.686 GPUs.
NVIDIA also dominated with the less powerful GPU Sierra, which is used by the third fastest supercomputer in the world with 71,6 Linpack petaflops. It has four V100 GPUs on each dual-link Power9 node, instead of six (IBM Power System S922LC, IBM POWER9 22C 3.1GHz, NVIDIA Volta GV100, Dual-rail Mellanox EDR Infiniband , IBM
DOE / NNSA / LLNL).
