Twitter "shares" its data with the academic world

A pilot project named Twitter Data Grants started it Twitter, through which some research institutions will be given access to its "public and historical data" (i.e., the archive of ).

As stated in the relevant announcement of the popular social network/microblogging tool, “with over 500 million tweets per day, Twitter has an expanding dataset from which we can draw on a wide variety of topics, from health issues such as where and when flu might occur, to global events."

Until now, as noted, the whole business of working with Twitter to gain access to data has been “» for researchers outside the company.

"The program Data Grants it intends to change this by linking research bodies and academics with the data they need ". Participation in the program is possible by submitting a proposal / request until March 15.

For the original pilot program, a relatively limited number of operators will be selected. In addition to the data, opportunities will be given to selected institutions to collaborate with Twitter engineers and researchers.

It is noted that Twitter files are up to 2006, and similar collaborations have been made in the past, such as John Hopkins University.

As Devin Gaffray, developer and owner of the technology startup Little Bird, previously reported in Wired στην Κοινωνική Επιστήμη του Ίντερνετ από το Πανεπιστήμιο της Οξφόρδης, τα δεδομένα από κοινωνικά δίκτυα όπως το and Twitter are probably the largest archive of human interaction ever created. “It will be 'biased' in favor of people connected to the Internet, but it's still better than before. Also, it's less work. You don't need to talk to 10.000 people. You just write some code to make it do it for you."
