Two suitors in the rural Internet

Finally, the decision-makers of the Information Society (KtP SA) counted two attendances in the competition for the of broadband networks in rural and remote areas, a budget project of 161 million euros. OTE, on the one hand, and the consortium of Intracom Holdings, Intrakat and hellas online, on the other, were the only ones to submit bids for the project, although information that had come to light wanted another scheme to be "unleashed" for the work.

This information insisted that the project - one of the largest in the field of broadband infrastructure in the country - would claim a joint venture of Cyta Greece, with the telecommunications provider PCCW (based in Hong Kong), but also the Chinese ZTE.

Rural Broadband's work concerns the installation and operation of broadband network infrastructure in almost 5.100 white rural and island regions (regions that do not currently have a broadband network), which correspond to approximately 40% of Greek territory.

Rural Broadband will be implemented through the Public Private Partnership (PPP) process. The selected entities will be invited to develop, commission and manage a public infrastructure network, which will support the provision of broadband infrastructure to telecommunications providers to offer end-to-end services. (citizens and businesses).

THE TARGET

It aims to reduce the "broadband gap" among the most disadvantaged areas in Greece, which are not provided with basic access and the other regions of the country enjoying broadband services.

Upon completion of the project, which will be "broken" into three geographical areas, a home user located in a "Rural" settlement will be able to connect to the internet with speeds of over 8Mbps (download) and at least 1MBps (upload), i.e. speeds capable of meeting the requirements for existing online services, as well as electronic public services (e-GOV, such as electronic , TAXISnet, e-paravolo).

Furthermore, during the second phase of the project, residents in the intervention areas will be able to connect at speeds of at least 30Mbps (download) and 4Mbps (upload).
