Canonical officially announced the next version of its operating system, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr). As of today the new distribution is available for download.
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) distribution is one of Ubuntu's most anticipated releases, mainly because it is an LTS version and because it incorporates many new features.
It's hard to list all the innovations you'll find in the new version of Ubuntu, and most of them are really minor improvements.
For example, Canonical decided it was time to do something about the menu. On very large screens with high resolutions, the users they need to move the mouse far enough between the open application window and the menu at the top of the screen.
With the addition of the new Locally Integrated Menu feature, users now have the ability to move menus from the top bar to the context of window, which makes it much easier activation of an application's options. With some clever heuristics, the new menus won't get in the way of the actual window.
Other important new features include a new lock screen, live window resizing, smaller Unity icons, new Linux kernel,, and more.
“Ubuntu 14.04 includes the 3.13.0-24.46 Linux kernel for Ubuntu based on the upstream stable Linux kernel”, says the official announcement. The developers probably didn't have enough time to adjust Linux kernel 3.14 in place, but 3.13 should be more than enough.
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS will be supported for 5 years for Ubuntu Desktop, Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu Core, Kubuntu, Edubuntu, and Ubuntu Kylin. All other versions will be supported for 3 years.
