A week before the scheduled Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish) point release, Canonical updated the kernel from Linux version 5.19 to Linux 6.2.
On August 10, 2023, Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS will reach (if all goes according to plan) the third point release in the series Jammy jellyfish and will be released with a newer kernel, namely Linux 6.2.
But Canonical has already pushed the Linux 6.2 HWE kernel to existing Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS users. So if you run Jammy Jellyfish and update your installation with the command sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade in the Terminal app, you will download the Linux 6.2 kernel.
Linux 6.2 is released by Canonical as a HWE (Hardware Enablement) kernel to make installation smoother on newer hardware for those who want to have the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish) series on a new computer.
Ubuntu 22.04 LTS was released on April 21, 2022 and featured the long-term supported Linux 5.15 LTS kernel series, which will continue to receive security updates until October 2026. However, it was replaced by Ubuntu 5.19's Linux kernel 22.10 (Kinetic Kudu ) when Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS was released.
In addition to the release of the new Linux 6.2 kernel, the Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS point release will also bring the updated packages released from Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS onwards, as well as the newest Mesa graphics stack for gamers, Mesa 23.0.4 .XNUMX.
