The Ubuntu Unity team today announced the first ISO images for public testing for a new flavor of Ubuntu, Ubuntu Lomiri.
For those who don't know, Lomiri is the continuation of the Unity 8 UI that Canonical abandoned a few years ago along with the Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system. The UBports team took over the development of Ubuntu Touch and converted Unity 8 to Lomiri.
Lomiri is already used in Ubuntu Touch and allows you to turn your mobile device into a desktop computer when connected to a monitor, keyboard and mouse. So the Ubuntu Unity team took the opportunity to create a live preinstalled ISO image of Ubuntu Lomiri.
So, on the occasion of the release of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat), you can download and try the Ubuntu Lomiri 24.04 distribution that comes with the Lomiri desktop (Unity 8). As you can imagine, even though it was modified to work on desktop computers, Lomiri is still a mobile OS. 
Ubuntu Lomiri has almost the same basic components as Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. The only difference from Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is that it uses Lomiri for desktop instead of GNOME.
Although it may look complicated on mobile devices, Lomiri is quite simple on desktop. It has an app screen on the left, which you can activate with the Super key, but also a notification center with Ayatana indicators, from where you can configure various desktop functions.
