This visual illusion is called motion aftereffect και αν θέλαμε να το μεταφράσουμε Ελληνικά θα το λέγαμε μετενέργεια κίνησης. Δεν είναι καινούργια discovery since it has been documented for the first time by Aristotle. When the human eye stares at an animated image for a period of time (in this case 10-20 seconds) and then looks at a non-animated image, the non-animated image appears to move in the opposite direction to the animated one.
You can do the same while you're out in nature. For example, if you find yourself in a waterfall, just look at the cascade for 20 or 30 seconds, and then turn your gaze to the rocks on the side or something. The rocks will look like they are moving in the opposite direction.
