The operating Windows 10 to version 1607 was released in August 2016. Since then Microsoft has released some major updates to the Windows 10 platform, such as Creators Update (version 1703) and Fall Creators Update (version 1709).
At the same time, all previous versions of Windows 10 were regularly updated with cumulative updates, security fixes, and enhancements for more stability.
Today with the change log for the current Patch Tuesday update of Windows 10 1607, the Microsoft Support page also contains the following announcement:
Windows 10 version 1607 reaches end of support on April 10, 2018. Devices running Windows 10 Home or Pro will no longer receive monthly security updates that contain protection for the latest threats. To continue receiving security updates and quality, Microsoft recommends the information on the latest version of Windows 10.
From April 10, all SKUs (by stock keeping unit) of Windows 10 version 1607 will no longer receive updates. Windows 10 Enterprise SKUs and Educations they will continue to receive updates for six months until October 9, 2018. Also, the long-term servicing channel will receive updates until October 2026.
Finally, today is the end of support for the 10 SKUs of 1511 Enterprise and Education.
Using an earlier version of Window 10 may allow attackers to compromise your systems by exploiting security blanks that have been uncovered and have not been updated.
