WinRAR version 5.0.1 Review

rar_1As we told you in an earlier publication, with each new final version of the popular WinRAR program, we will grant 5 lucky people an equal number of licenses to use the latest version. The license will not give the right to upgrade but will last for life.

What does WinRAR do?

WinRAR is a very lightweight, flexible and easy-to-use archive utility that can unpair and compress both RAR and ZIP. WinRAR decompression supports many file formats. Available in 32 and 64bit.

Installing WinRAR will not bring you any difficulty, and it will be completed almost immediately. The only point where you will stop asking for your choices is when you have to decide which files the program can process.

You can choose from the following formats: CAB, ARJ, LZH, TAR, GZ, ACE, UUE, BZ2, JAR, ISO, Z and 7-Zip. These files can be unpacked by the application. WinRAR can only compress data in RAR or ZIP format.

Using WinRAR, a professional tool, is very simple, even for inexperienced users. By right-clicking on the file you wish to compress or unpack, you are given all the options and can be easily executed with one click. Besides, there is also the Wizard option if you run the program from your desktop icon. It will give you all the necessary options to edit your files.

According to WinRAR developers, the latest version of the program exploits multi-core system processors (if any) to achieve faster compression rates, depending on the hardware you use.

The WinRAR 5.0 version has the ability to create larger dictionaries that reach 1 GB in 64 bit versions of WinRAR, which results in higher file compression.

about winrar 5.01

Other new interesting features brought by WinRAR 5.0 Beta 1 is the new recording function for recovering damaged files based on Reed-Solomon error correcting codes. The new feature makes it possible to recover damaged files (download with bad eg), much stronger. In test scenarios of a damaged 1GB file, with a 10% recovery record and an average damage size of 32KB, WinRAR was able to repair nine times more damage than the previous version.

From version version WinRAR 5.0 has been boosted with BLAKE2sp hash used as checksum files. By adding BLAKE2, one can definitely find whether 2 or above, files are different, or CRC32 values, and if two different files can share the same value. In addition, if CRC32 has a small value, there is a small chance that damaged files will not be detected, which can not happen with BLAKE2.

It is worth noting, however, that these processes use a significant amount of RAM (around 120 MB). Compression ratios vary depending on the type of file you want to compress (for example, if you choose to compress .mp3 or .avi files, there will be no difference in file size as it is already compressed), but generally appears to be much better faster than too many other archiving programs.

Safety

To date, .RAR files used encryption of 128-bit AES. Following the user's requirements with the release of the new beta version of WinRAR 5.0, the application upgraded its algorithm to include encryption in 256-bit AES. This ensures the protection of your sensitive data from unwanted effects.

Functions

With WinRAR in addition to compressing or unpacking any kind of file you can

Automatically delete original files after compressing them - unpacking them.
Create a SFX file, that is, an * .exe file that will be decompressed by itself (in a folder of your choice) if you try to run it.
Lock your files with a password
Compress by holding and recovery files if the file is once damaged.
Test your files.
Add authentication verification.

5.01 version

1. New archival form.

  • You can use the normal application option to create files or through the command line to create files
RAR 5.0. Earlier versions of WinRAR will not be able to unpack files that are compressed with RAR 5.0.

2. Changes to the compression algorithm of RAR 5.0:

  • The maximum compression dictionary size was increased up to 1 GB in the version of 64 bit WinRAR. The 32 bit version of the application can use a dictionary up to 256 MB when creating a file. Both versions of the 32 bit and 64 bit can unpack files of any dictionary size.
  • The default dictionary size for RAR 5.0 on 32 MB usually results in a higher compression ratio but slower than RAR in 4 versions.
  • The syntax of the -md switch has been modified to support larger dictionaries. The addition of "k", "m" and "g" determine the size in kilo -, mega - and gigabytes. For example - md64m for 64 MB dictionary. If you do not use modifiers, the program uses megabytes
  • The RAR 5.0 format includes executable Intel IA-32 files and delta compression algorithms, while ta RAR 4x text, audio, true color and Itanium algorithms and are no longer supported. The algorithms removed were not effective for modern data types.
  • RAR 5.0 decompressor can use different CPU cores. Although not to the same extent as with the compression algorithm. So it improves the decompression speed in with little compressible or when using the BLAKE2 checksums.

3. Changes to the format of RAR 5.0 files:

  • The time it uses when saving a compressed file is UTC instead of the local time it used in earlier versions. This makes the exchange of files between different time zones much more practical.
  • File names and archive comments use UTF-8.

4. The new version brings improved recovery of corrupted files.By correcting Reed - Solomon errors. If recovery is required the record size is large enough, 5% and more.
The new error correction system provides much more resistance to multiple failures than the RAR 4.x revival

Changes to the RAR 5.0 Encryption Algorithm:

  • The encryption algorithm has been changed from AES – 128 to AES – 256 CBC mode. The pars is now PBKDF2 with HMAC – SHA256.
  • Better verification of your password will allow you to locate the wrong passwords without having to open the entire folder.

His price is 29.95 euro.

Errors corrected in 5.0.1 Final:

  • The "Search" command could fail when searching for a text string in files  . 7z
  • When you open RAR 5.0 files with encrypted filenames, WinRAR could give you the wrong message that the password is incorrect. This only happened if the passwords for internal and external files were different. However the export was not affected, all files could be decompressed, regardless of this message.
  • The "Use for all files" option in the password dialog box no longer overrides RAR 5.0 file password requests with encrypted filenames.
  • Η its address bar WinRAR did not properly process the environment variable on paths, such as% temp%.
  • NTFS security file storage and alternate data streams did not work for filenames longer than 260 characters.
  • The "Test" command could incorrectly report corrupted data in a valid recovery if only a portion of the RAR 5.0 files had been scanned. This does not happen if the entire contents of the file are checked.
  • The order "Test" incorrectly reported errors when verifying RAR 4.x Unix compressed files.
  • The WinRAR "View" command did not work for bzip2 files.
  • If the "high precision modification time" in the archive dialog box was disabled WinRAR did not save modification time.
  • If the destination routes contain . \ or .. \ does not work exporting non - RAR files in its command line mode WinRAR.
  • WinRAR could not open many CAB files.

positively

New encryption, very strong compression and more security. Completely new kernel structure for better compression results in new files and of course for better collaboration with new hardware. Many fixes!

Negatively

Older versions do not open 5 version files and should be compressed by the user to use them. As with any compression tool, the use of system resources is high enough. Although the 5 version is much better than 4, the system resources it uses will always fit for improvements.

Summary

WinRAR continues to be the top Windows compression tool. High compression, encryption more security for each computer signed by a highly specialized and trusted company.
