While Google, Tesla and BMW are developing their own stand-alone vehicles, a newly created company created by four former Google technicians prepares an auto-drive kit that can be placed in any commercial truck.
The Otto stand-alone system increases the ability of drivers to cover long distances on major motorways.
The cofounder of the company Lior Ron, who was a former employee of Google Maps, reported on Backchannel:
"Τα φορτηγά προκαλούν 9,5 τοις εκατό του συνόλου των θανάτων, και περίπου οι μισοί από τους φορτηγατζήδες είναι μακριά από το home 200 nights a year, and they sleep in parking lots.
Due to federal regulations, a truck can only travel 11 times a day by a single driver. After 10 hours, the accident rate becomes higher. So driving with better safety 24/7, υπερδιπλασιάζοντας την ικανότητα του οδηγού, είναι ένα πολύ ισχυρό οικονομικό επιχείρημα."
However, the Otto kit still has a long way to go. The company, should persuade transport regulators that the system is fairly safe to use.
Otto has not yet announced a timeline for the release of the self-driving kit. But according to Ron, it will not be late.
«Θέλουμε να επιδείξουμε μια διαδρομή στο εγγύς μέλλον, για να δείξουμε ότι η τεχνολογία μας είναι εμπορικά βιώσιμη", δήλωσε στο Backchannel.
