In 2019, SEO tool provider Ahrefs announced that it would build its own search engine. After investing $ 60 million (its own money), this month the search engine finally launched under the name "Yep" and Ahrefs refers to it as "Google's competitor".
However, we have seen many Google "competitors" and "killers" come and go over the last two decades. So for now, let's call it an alternative to Google…
According to the manufacturers, Yep will not collect personal information (eg exact geographical location, name, age, gender) by default and Yep's search history will not be stored anywhere.
The data that Yep is interested in is the aggregate search statistics for improving algorithms, spelling corrections and search suggestions, according to the company.
"In other words, we store some data in searches, but never in a personally identifiable way," said Ahrefs CEO Dmytro Gerasymenko.
What Yep will use from each search:
- Keywords.
- Browser language preference.
- Approximate the geographical region at the scale of a region or city (by IP address)
AhrefsBot has more than 8 billion visits websites κάθε 24 ώρες, γεγονός που το καθιστά το δεύτερο πιο ενεργό πρόγραμμα detectionς στον Ιστό, μετά από την Google, αναφέρει η Ahrefs. Yep's search index is updated every 15 to 30 minutes. Every day, the company adds 30 million websites.
Ahrefs reported that the centre data is currently located in Singapore and uses approximately 1.000 servers that store and process 100 petabytes of web data (web pages, links between pages and search index). Before the end of the year, Ahrefs plans to open a new data center in the US.
Yep claims that it will give 90% of its advertising revenue to content creators.
Many promises from a company trying to stand up to Google. To see how far it will go…
