Linux Steam Beta: Linux system users who want to play games have more options today because of a new compatibility feature (still in beta) announced today by Valve, the company behind Steam.
Linux users will need to install the Linux Steam Beta (Client) to get access on feature, which brings games such as: NieR: Automata, DOOM, Final Fantasy VI, and Doki Doki Literature Club to Linux for the first time.
About 3.000 Steam games support Linux inherently, but there are too many others that are not supported. Steam Play could change this by allowing developers to try their game at compatibility levels and then quickly release a version that is compatible with Linux.
The official follows company statement:
today we have the Beta of a new and improved version of Steam Play for all Linux users! It includes a modified Wine distribution, called Proton, and can provide compatibility to Windows game titles.
Steam Play uses Vulkan to display DirectX 11 and 12 and supports full mode screen but also game controllers.
This is a double-edged sword for Linux gamers. New technology it will certainly offer more options, but there is always the risk that game developers will start using only this and stop making games for Linux altogether. The concern is there but that doesn't mean most users won't be happy with access to more games.
