Linux Steam Beta: Linux users looking to play games have more options starting today, thanks to a new compatibility feature (still in beta) announced today by Valve, the company located behind Steam.
Linux users will need to install the Linux Steam Beta (Client) to access the feature, which brings games such as: NieR: Automata, DOOM, Final to Linux for the first time Fantasy VI, and Doki Doki Literature Club.
About 3.000 Steam games support Linux inherently, but there are too many others that are not supported. Steam Play could change this by allowing developers to try their game at compatibility levels and then quickly release a version that is compatible with Linux.
The official follows company statement:
today we have the Beta of a new and improved version of Steam Play for all Linux users! It includes a modified Wine distribution, called Proton, and can provide compatibility to Windows game titles.
Steam Play uses Vulkan to display DirectX 11 and 12 and supports full mode screens but also game controllers.
It's a double-edged sword for them players of Linux. The new technology will certainly offer more options, but there is always the risk that game developers will start using only this and stop making games for Linux altogether. The concern is there but that doesn't mean most users won't be happy with access to more games.
